Ayurveda, a Sanskrit term translating to ‘the science of life’ or ‘the knowledge of life’, is about more than just health. The goal of Ayurveda is to achieve balance and optimum health by following the laws of nature. When we are aware of the laws of nature, we can adjust our daily routines and behaviours to align with better wellbeing.
It’s a journey towards balance and vitality by harmonising with nature’s rhythms.
With over 5000 years of history, Ayurveda predates many medical systems, shaping practices like Traditional Chinese Medicine, naturopathy, and aromatherapy.
It guides us to take charge of our well-being through nourishing diet, mindful habits, and attuning to nature’s cycles, aiming not only for disease-free living but for the radiant equilibrium of a clear mind and a vibrant body.
According to Ayurvedic philosophy, our health thrives when the five elements – earth, air, fire, ether, and water – within us, sync harmoniously with our external environment. When this balance falters, health issues emerge.
These elements blend into three distinct bodily intelligences or “doshas”: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Vata – a blend of air and earth – fuels motion, from circulation to nerve impulses, with its cool, light essence, mirrored in our thoughts’ flow.
Pitta – born of fire and water – drives transformation, processing food into nutrients while igniting our passions, forming our fiery temperaments.
Kapha – rooted in earth and water – provides stability, nurturing growth, calmness, and love, reflected in our bodily fluids and mental serenity.
Our bodies encompass all three doshas to varying degrees, their equilibrium ever-changing with seasons and time of day. Aim to balance all doshas – any imbalance accumulates toxins and fosters disease. Understanding your inherent constitution (prakruti) and its imbalances (vikruti) guides targeted treatment. Identifying these unveils a roadmap to balanced living, embracing your traits, tendencies, and vulnerabilities. The knowledge enables us to take practical steps to design a diet and lifestyle in harmony with our environment.
